34 Ypres Street is a historical novel depicting the coming-of-age of Werner, a boy born into an impoverished family trying to survive the harsh times and conditions of Belgium in WWII during the Nazi occupation. Taking place in the city of Menen in Belgium on the border with France, this story depicts the wartime years entirely from Werner’s eye view, through the people in his close neighborhood who are like family, Werner learns about the world beyond the basement he lives in. When the war ends, everyone has changed, everyone carries the scars of the war and everyone has to start a new life, especially Werner. When he reaches the age of eighteen years, he knows what to do with his life.
